Neighbors
Drive Change |
The shabby little building called the Wake-Up Drive
Through coffee shop at 5633 SE Division has been
reclaimed by the community - thanks to interested neighbors,
collaborative efforts and an unrelenting focus to make
a change.
For months, neighbors noticed that the shop didn't
seem to have a stream of regular customers or to serve
much coffee. Neighbors knew something was going
on. Police and drug enforcement got involved, setting
up surveillance, occasionally using the teachers'
lounge at Atkinson grade school across the street.
It was determined that a key ingredient of methamphetamines
was being sold out of the building. The US Federal Marshall's
office seized the property after a raid was conducted.
The property has been renamed Atkinson/Tabor Community
Commons and is under the control of Southeast Uplift,
the neighborhood coalition for the area. Southeast Uplift
is administering the building on behalf of the Mt. Tabor
Neighborhood Association, South Tabor Neighborhood Association
and Atkinson Elementary PTA.
The project and the outcome are a dramatic example of
what can be accomplished when dedicated communities
work together. Neighbors, businesses, community, city,
state and federal efforts cooperated over a span of
years to achieve this success.
Many projects and opportunities remain to contribute
to this effort. To find out how you can help, contact
SE Uplift at 503.232.0010.

Expertise
in Health & Wellness |
Portland Health and Wellness is a small, locally-owned
clinic located close-by at 1821 SE Ankeny Street. Our
clinic stands apart from others in a number of important
ways. The clinical team at PH&W provides top-level individual
care as well as high-quality workshops, classes and
programs. Class sizes are usually limited to 12 (fewer
for cooking classes). In these small group settings,
Portland Health and Wellness is able to offer an affordable
and cost-effective means to help you develop (or enhance)
health-promoting skills.
Although the clinicians come from different professional
backgrounds, we all have a common interest in nutrition,
whole health, disease prevention, evidence-based care
and the interplay of emotional factors with health.
Currently the clinical team consists of a clinical nutritionist,
psychologist, counselor, and psychiatrist. Periodically
guest presenters offer workshops and classes at the
clinic. In the future, acupuncture and preventive medicine
services will be available.
Core to the clinic is a comfortable and inviting cooking
demonstration area. Health-based cooking classes cover
a variety of topics, ranging from basic cooking skills
to preparing 30 minute gourmet meals to teaching men
who hate to cook. Space is available within the clinic
for yoga, Qigong, and other forms of movement and physical
activity.
12 Weeks to Mindful Eating is a program designed
and offered by Donald Altman, MA. This group is for
men and women who struggle with their eating patterns
and wish to develop a healthier relationship with food.
The group focuses on the positive benefits that food
has to offer and uses mindfulness, or awareness, as
a key component to gaining more skill with food. Donald
Altman, MA is a counselor, former Buddhist monk, and
award-winning writer who has authored several books
and CDs on mindful living and eating. Mr. Altman is
in private practice and teaches at Portland State University
and Lewis and Clark College's Graduate School of
Education and Counseling. He serves on the Board of
Directors of the Center for Mindful Eating.
Other current offerings include Master Wu's Qigong
class, a weekly weight management group, a group for
people suffering from disordered eating/eating disorders,
cooking classes, and a year-long evidence-based weight
loss program. For an up-to-date schedule of classes
and programs, visit
Portland Health and Wellness. A free monthly e-newsletter
is available which offers valuable health tips ranging
from evidence-based weight loss to emotional eating
to stress management. Ask to receive it by contacting

Ready or not it seems like summer is coming to a close.
While the days are sunny, get out and enjoy our side of
town. I am often heard repeating "I have everything
I need right here in Southeast." And...it's
true! Book stores, movie theaters, dog parks, plant nurseries,
playgrounds, breakfast joints, Mexican food, Indian food,
Mediterranean food, American comfort food, coffee and more
coffee. No wonder I never cross the river. Savor the end
of summer right here in the neighborhood.
A special welcome to the newest supporter of the Neighborhood
News the auto shop right nearby - Hawthorne Auto
Clinic. Owners Liz and Jim have been long time supporters
of important projects and issues. They are committed to
their community and to sustainable practices. Plus, they'll
do great work on your car.
PARTIES
& PICNICS
The
whirlyGirlz hoop troupe entertained the crowd at the annual
Grant Street Fayre held a few weeks ago. The whirlyGirlz
also led a hoop playshop, teaching a street full of kids
hoop basics and simple tricks. Other entertainment included
a kids' talent show, the band SweetJuice and the always
amazing fire-dance show to close out the night. The 300+
people who attended also enjoyed the annual raffle and large
community potluck.
Just down the road neighbors gathered in the Center Circle
Park for the annual Friends of Ladd's Addition Gardens
picnic. Hundreds of neighbors and garden volunteers gathered
on a sunny Sunday for great food, old fashioned games and
a bit of an unexpected water balloon fight. Thanks especially
to FLAG, Jerry Petty, Darren Winward, Videorama, Portland
Roasting and Rand at Palio's.
KNIT - NOW!
If
you think knitting is reserved for those rainy winter evenings
- you haven't been to Mabel's! This local hot spot
at SE 30th & Division is the perfect place to hang no matter
the weather. Mabel's Cafe & Knittery is outfitted
with everything you need to knit (or crochet) AND they have
air conditioning, ice cream and milkshakes in the summer
months.
Vermont native Cait Smith opened Mabel's in June 2004.
Cait learned to knit from her Mom, Mabel, and longed to
someday combine her two favorite things - yarn and coffee.
Having grown up above a general store, Cait knew just what
to do. Mabel's Cafe & Knittery is a great place to learn
to knit, to take classes, to relax and to work on a project
(with help nearby), to shop for yarn and tools and to enjoy
a coffee, a pastry, a microbrew or a glass of wine while
you're doing it. Kids are even welcomed with their own
area for play, complete with toys and books.
You can even shop Mabel's online or get the schedule
for upcoming classes at
Mabel's Cafe & Knittery. Start now and that new
sweater you need will be ready by winter!
TIME FOR TREES
Now is the time when things gear up for the HAND Friends
of Trees tree planting. Planting day comes to the neighborhoods
on December 2. Long before planting day however there is
much to be done including hearing from neighbors who would
like a tree for their parking strip, who want more information
or who would like to volunteer. Contact Jack at 503.238.0912
for details.
