Holiday Booze Bazaar

House Spirits Invite You!

The very fun guys at House Spirits, invite their Southeast neighbors to their first Booze Bazaar on Saturday, December 9th, noon till 5 pm.

Lee Medoyeff and Christian Krogstad are the local makers of Aviation Gin and Medoyeff Vodka. Their House Spirits Distillery is the latest addition to the many creative inner southeast neighborhood businesses that handcraft fine coffees, chocolates, beers and meals that have created buzz in the city and around the country.

The bazaar will also feature Ransom Grappas and traditional cocktail-making accessories available for purchase. Alma Chocolate and Viande Meats will offer great tasting cocktail fare.

Editors from Imbibe Magazine will be on hand to talk about cocktail trends and their successful magazine making a national splash. Imbibe is headquartered in the Central Eastside Industrial District.

The neighborhood experience includes much to revel in and salivate over whether you are man or mutt - especially at this time of year. Read on for some great events, including, dare I say it, A Booze Bazaar. Or what could be better than purchasing gifts from local artisans and supporting Dove Lewis Animal Hospital at the same time. If you're not into shopping or spirits, there are opportunities for music lessons, concerts, football paired with beer, a healing massage or carolling in a horse-drawn wagon. I know where I'll be and I hope I see you there.

Thanks to new Community Partners: Concentrates, 2613 SE 8th, offering organic feeds for our growing clutch of Southeast chickens; and Donovan Monroe, massage therapist, working out of the Facing Grace Studio on the Ladd Circle. Thanks for your participation.

Thanks again to Nadya for donating a tree to be raffled off at the Friends of Ladd's Addition Holiday event (details below). Get your tree before the best ones are gone.

HAWTHORNE TRANSIT PROJECT CONTINUES
Resuming in early January, the massive transit project on Hawthorne Boulevard will begin its next major phase where the boulevard intersects with SE 20th and continues up to SE 39th. Look for intersection changes at SE 20th, new street signals at SE 35th, replacement of existing signals at SE 20th/Elliott, SE 27th and SE 37th. Curb extensions and bus stop improvements will be made along Hawthorne and three new areas of covered bike parking will be installed at SE Elliott, SE 36th and SE 38th. NOW THAT'S GREAT NEWS!
Locals continue to earn high gloss accolades. The Winter 2006, T Magazine, a special publication of the New York Times focuses on travel and lists a "Best of" guide and includes Portland dining. Four Eastside earned great mentions for their creative spin on local and organic ingredients. Vindalho, Nostrana, Le Pigeon and Simpatica Dining Hall all received high praise.

Loyly Sauna & Steam enjoyed a nice little write up in the current issue of Sunset Magazine. Our very own Sauna & Steam location was praised for it's relaxing and healthful offerings, Scandinavian beverages offered after 7pm and it's minimal, serene design. Congratulations Jessica! Loyly is located at 2713 SE 21st. Call 503.236.6850 or visit Loyly.

CLASSIC CRUST BAKES AUTHENTIC BREADS & PASTRIES
If you've travelled in Europe or spent time in many American cities and their ethnic neighborhoods, you know that bread and pastries are an art form. Many of us have longed to find that bakery that does an exceptional job on those delicious breads and treats you have tasted or have hoped to find again. Well, those unforgettable items have come to you. Eastside neighbor Leonora "Nora" Vujovic is offering up delicious authentic Eastern European breads, cakes and pastries. Nora works her magic from recipes that have been in her family for five generations. The Classic Crust Bakery is located at 8911 Southeast Stark. All created from natural ingredients, Nora's breads are vegan-friendly and contain no preservatives or artificial coloring. Available loaves include whole wheat, sourdough and rye. Bags of large bread cubes are available too and are perfect for stuffing or a tasty fondue. Nora's artisan Romanian specialties are ideal for holiday meals and gifts. Call 503.408.0228 for more information or visit the bakery Monday-Saturday, 11am-6pm.

CONTROVERSIAL CURRICULUM
On Monday, 12/11 at the main Portland Public Schools administration building, 501 North Dixon Street, 6pm, controversial changes to core curriculum will be under discussion. Many neighbors and parents are concerned about the implications and the possible loss of important programs, such as the International Baccalaureate program. The scope of changes will be drastic if implemented and there is a short timeline for the community to understand the impact and to have their voices heard. For more information contact Corriedawn Greiling-Fritsch, Cleveland HS PTA President, at 971.404.8061.

JAZZ DUO AT CLINTON CORNER CAFE
Talented jazz guitarist and instructor at Cadenza Academy, Michael Pardew teams up with Pere Soto to play jazz guitar for all comers to enjoy on Thursday, December 14th, 8-10pm. The guys will be performing at Clinton Corner Cafe, SE 21st & Clinton. The show is free and all ages are welcome. Guests sitting at the bar must be 21 or older. Come out for some great jazz, supper or a drink and be a part of this happening corner.

PLANS EMERGE FOR DIVISION BROWNFIELD SITE
Recent meetings at neighborhood associations revealed plans that will culminate in development at the long vacant lot at SE 20th and Division. The angled lot at the edge of Ladd's Addition is a brownfield that has undergone extensive testing, cleanup and more testing. The lot will be developed by REACH in partnership with the Portland Community Land Trust. The site will include a 4 story mixed use building and parking. Three floors will be condos, many as one-bedroom units. It is expected that at least half of the 25 units would be designated as affordable housing. The rest would be offered at market rates. If plans move ahead without interruption, occupancy could begin in the second half of 2008.

FOOTBALL & FUN AT THE HEDGE HOUSE
Our friends at Hedge House love brewing beer and they love football, especially Pittsburgh Steelers football. Imagine how the suds flowed when the Steelers won the Super Bowl in January. Another season is underway and 3 more games are on tap. A big screen TV is set up on the deck and other viewing opportunities abound. Order up some pierogies, premanti sandwiches and kielbasa sausages. Oh yeah, you can wash it all down with Iron City ale on tap along with the usual lineup of great New Old Lompoc Brewery Beers. Upcoming games include: Carolina Panthers, 12/17 at 10am; Baltimore Ravens, 12/24 at 10am and Cincinnati Bengals, 12/31 at 10am. The Hedge House is located at 3412 SE Division, call 503-235-2215 for details.
