Outlook
is bright for 2006 |
The
2005 real estate market ended with a bang in December.
The median price for a Portland area home increased
by 20.40% to $252,900 compared to December 2004, according
to Regional Multiple Listing Service.
Other important data, such as the inventory of available
homes was calculated as a 2.1 months supply, which registers
as close to the record minimum availability that has
defined the local market since last spring.
While some areas of the United States have started to
experience a slowing housing market, the Portland area
shows continued strength.
This is especially true for the neighborhoods of inner
Southeast Portland where homes include highly sought-after
design features and character. As a specialist in helping
you buy and sell old and historic homes, I know that
Southeast neighborhoods include everything that is wonderful
about Portland - walkable communities, unique shopping
districts and restaurants, bikepaths, parks, trees and
neighborhood schools. The homes in our communities will
continue to strongly appreciate in 2006.
2005 was an exciting year for me as I joined The Meadows
Group. Our office is right here in the neighborhood
at 1902 SE Morrison. I am proud to be a part of this
excellent, local company that supports my focus and
showcases my signature green FOR SALE
sign complete with decorative column logo and distinctive
phrase Specializing in Old and Historic Homes.

2006 looks like another great year for the vintage homes
of inner Southeast.

is on the way. While it's dry, get out and enjoy something
chocolatey, steamey or even recycled.
BIG PARTY IN THE HOUSE
Cheers and screams of joy are still emanating from the Hedge
House, everyone's favorite pub at 3412 SE Division Street,
where dedicated Steelers fans gathered last weekend. Led
by owner Jerry Fetcher, a big Steelers fan himself, the
guys added a tent and three televisions to the usually cozy
confines to watch Sunday's game. Lots of great food - burgers,
kielbasa and pierogies - was washed down with Iron City
Beer.
WILD OATS CLOSING ON DIVISION
It's official - Wild Oats is closing its Division Street
location on February 18th. Their Real Estate Department
has arranged for Mark New of New & Neville to lease the
property. The space, to be leased in its entirety, is 25,000
sq. ft. with two parking lots.
Hosford-Abernethy and Richmond Neighborhood Associations
and the Division/Clinton Business Association (DCBA) are
convening a joint meeting with Mr. New to discuss possible
tenants for the space. These organizations are especially
interested in a local and/or sustainable business taking
over the space. They invite everyone to attend the discussion.
A time and place for the gathering is yet to be announced.
Contact Linda Nettekoven of
HAND at 503.235.7917 or
Jean Baker of the DCBA for more information.
SOME IDEAS, VALENTINE
Visit the newly opened Bakery Bar at 1028 SE Water
Avenue at Taylor Street for a beautiful and tasty treat
expertly crafted by owner Jocelyn Barda. See their
site or their case for mouth watering tarts, cupcakes
and mini-cakes built for two. Savory items are also on the
menu, as are cocktails. Stop in to order or pick something
up for you and/or your sweetie. The Bakery Bar is open 7:30
am - 6pm Mondays-Thursdays, 7:30 am - 10 pm Fridays, and
8 am - 10 pm Saturdays.
Hard to find a better gift for your loved one or yourself
than a visit to Loyly at 2713 SE Clinton for a relaxing
and restorative sauna & steam. The beautiful, brand
new facility offers separate hours for women and men. Check
out
Loyly for all the details and the Valentine's Special.
Nothing says "I love you" quite like a great
cocktail. Starting tonight, My Bloody Valentine hits
the menu at Castagna 1752 SE Hawthorne and Cafe
Castagna right next door. This treat is a beautifully
dressed blood orange Margarita: juice of blood oranges,
Sauza Gold Tequila, Triple Sec and Simple Syrup served on
the rocks with a salted rim. You just might have to say
it twice.
Tuesday the 14th at Simpatica Dining Hall is sold
out - but who wants to wait 'till then anyway? Start expressing
your love on Sunday eve - treat your Valentine to dinner
at Simpatica Dining Hall. Enjoy a five course meal
that will warm you heart and soul. Dinner begins at 7 pm:
Oysters on the half shell with Champagne Mignonette, Spiedini
di Bianco on Arugula, Soups du Poisson, Rack of Lamb for
Two and Boca Negra with Blood Oranges. $35 per person plus
wine and gratuity. Reservations are required for this Southeast
pheonominon called Simpatica, located at 828 SE Ash, call
503.235.1600. Visit
Simpatica Catering for all the info.
Depending on how things go for you on Tuesday, here's another
idea to consider. On Thursday, February 16th learn
"The Truth about Love" from Norene Gonsiewski, LCSW,
and Nicole Carroll, LCSW both highly trained specialists
at Innovations in Counseling at 3310 SE Division
Street. This presentation is offered as part of their Winter
Life Matters Workshop Series, $10 per person, reservations
are required: call 503.234.4440. Their description of the
workshop reads: All romantic relationships go through predictable
stages of love: Infatuation, Post-Rapture, Discovery and
Connection. Learn how physiological changes account for
some of the intense feelings brought on by initial attraction.
However glorious it may feel...this heady infatuation stage
is not what love is really about. Learn about the brain
chemistry of love potion #9 and some myths that can destroy
relationships. Come alone or bring your partner. See
Innovations in Counseling for more information.

CHANGES FOR EASTBANK FARMERS MARKET
The three year old Eastbank Farmers Market has been officially
turned over to the Portland Farmers Market organization.
Pioneered by the Buckman Neighborhood Association and neighborhood
activists Tom and Christina Grace, the Eastbank Farmers
Market has been a big hit. The Graces, who managed the Market
on a day-to-day basis, have decided to return to the East
Coast. The Portland Farmers Market has stepped up to take
over the Market and provide management for Eastbank during
its season: Thursdays, 3:30-7:30 pm, June through September
30th. New events such as a Berry Festival and additional
farmers and artisan food producers may be added. The Eastbank
Farmers Market is held in the parking lot of Hinson Memorial
Church at SE 20th and Salmon.
A debt of gratitude is owed to Tom and Chris for all their
hard work and contributions to our community. You will be
missed.
