FLAG
Annual Potluck Picnic |
Get ready for the much-loved annual Friends of Ladd's
Addition Gardens potluck picnic for Ladd's neighbors
and garden volunteers. The picnic, a neighborhood favorite,
is scheduled for Sunday, July 30th 4-7 pm in the Ladd
Circle. Everyone who volunteers or donates to support
FLAG, helps out in the rose gardens or has Adopted-a-Bed
is welcomed to join in.
Bring your favorite dish to share and enjoy the park,
the company, the games for kids and lots of water balloons
to cool you off. There will be ice cream, prizes and
FLAG t-shirts for sale.
FLAG is a leading friends group in Portland, advocating
for the four rose gardens and the Center Circle park
located in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood. The unique
parks, historic elms and angled street pattern are defining
features of the Ladd's Addition Historic District.
FLAG was founded by neighbors more than 14 years ago
as a way to bring the community together. Since that
time FLAG has thrived and is a critical partner to other
organizations in the community and across the city.
FLAG sponsors two neighborhood events, the summer picnic
and the holiday caroling party. Additionally, FLAG works
with the City to care for and advocate on behalf of
the city parks in the neighborhood. Funds raised have
been invested in the neighborhood parks, improving infrastructure
like sprinklers and benches so that the gardens are
healthy, efficiently cared for and enjoyed by everyone.
Increasingly, FLAG has used the gardens to gather people
together, to build community and to keep the neighborhood
safe and welcoming.

Locals
Lead Service Learning |
As volunteers with the Northwest Service Academy AmeriCorps
program Beret Halverson from the Abernethy Garden of
Wonders; Leon Latino, Service Learning Coordinator at
Pacific Crest Community School; Kelly Alsup, Lewis Elementary
Garden Program; and Rachael Torchia, Mentorship Coordinator
at Trillium Charter School have created a service learning
trip to the US-Mexico Border.
In August high school students from Trillium Charter
School, Pacific Crest Community School and Springwater
Trail Alternative School will travel to the border to
learn about poverty and immigration in their local,
national and global communities. The trip is designed
to lead participants towards the discovery of a global
identity and understanding of the relevance these issues
hold to their lives in Oregon.
As preparation for the trip, students have been studying
the US-Mexico Border and participating in fundraising,
outreach and local service projects.
For a few students this will be their first airplane
flight, for others their first trip outside the Pacific
Northwest, and for most, their first experience in international
service. The mix of rural and urban school groups will
bring slightly different insights to, and assumptions
about, issues such as poverty, immigration and migrant
labor.
This trip will lead to open minds, inspired further
learning, people united in a humanitarian cause and
service to communities in need.
Further information can be found at
Mexico Trip or by contacting
Beret or
Rachael.
Your support is very much appreciated and donations
are tax deductible.

It sure is hot but I'm going to try and not talk
about the weather. Briefly though, the best way to beat
the heat is to keep your car off the road and hang out at
those concert halls, movie theaters, coffee shops and restaurants
that also serve air conditioning. Read on for some ways
to let the days go by, some cool and tasty places to wine
and dine, some streets to celebrate and a few streets to
avoid.
DIVISION/CLINTON STREET FAIR, JULY
22nd
Get ready for a fun-filled Saturday when the Division/Clinton

District. Turn out to experience what makes our section
of Portland so unique.
The Fair runs from 12th to 50th on Division and 21st to
26th on Clinton. Many hard working folks pitch in to make

PARKING METERS? - Under discussion:
Recently, Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) Bureau
head Commissioner Sam Adams gathered neighborhood and business
representatives together for a "Neighborhood Parking Benefits"
presentation. If implemented, PDOT would install parking
meters along interested main corridors of business districts.
Revenue from these meters, less PDOT's overhead costs, would
be collected and spent by the neighborhood or business association
for neighborhood improvements, traffic calming measures
and so on. The program will not be forced on any district
or neighborhood.
Corridors under consideration include Hawthorne, Division,
MLK/Grand, Belmont, Fremont, Hollywood and St. John's. Douglas
Kolozsvari, co-author of The High Cost of Free Parking,
was at the presentation to advocate for the project, citing
a case study in Pasadena, California in which a similar
project was able to generate significant income for local
neighborhood improvements. Concerns regarding the applicability
of this project included fewer parking spaces and less disposable
income in Portland.
The City needs to hear from neighbors and business owners
about whether or not they want parking meters in their communities.
Some discussion is also ongoing about "permit only" parking
on side streets surrounding business districts. For more
information, contact Gabe Onyeador, Program Manager, at
503.823.7794 or
Gabe Onyeador.
