SE Neighbors go to Market

There are many reasons to head to the Portland Farmers Market held Saturday mornings in the South Park Blocks on the Portland State University Campus.

One of the best draws nowadays is a visit to Pinestate Biscuits. Brought to Portland from North Carolina, three eastside neighbors offer an extremely tasty treat from their home state.

Waltar Alexander, Kevin Atchley and Brian Synder were longing for the buttermilk biscuits and accompaniments they grew up with. These enterprising young men joined forces to revive southern biscuits and make them available to lucky locals. Numerous options and combinations are available including biscuits with sausage, fried chicken, bacon, cheese, eggs and in some instances all of the aforementioned.

Pinestate Biscuits are available on Saturdays at their stall at the Portland Farmers Market - definitely through October. After that ... the future is under some serious consideration. The guys hope to open a storefront serving commuters, families and everyone else in need of a high quality, satisfying and made-to-order breakfast, lunch or snack. If everything comes together their biscuit breakfast house will materialize next year, on a busy boulevard hopefully near you and me.

In the meantime, hurry to the market for your chance to enjoy a Pinestate Biscuit.

Plan your trip for Saturday, October 28th, 8:30 am to 2:30 pm and participate in PFM's The Great Pumpkin Event featuring a carving demonstration, cider and a costume parade.

Schoolbook Challenge is Coming!

Coming soon -- Powell's Books Schoolbook Challenge. For seven weeks, beginning November 14th and running through January 1, 2007, Powell's Books challenges the community to help donate more than 50,000 books to Portland and Beaverton Public Schools.

The purpose of the campaign is to get much needed reading materials into the hands of school-age children in the Portland area and to heighten public awareness of the needs of public schools.

Powell's is asking its customers to make contributions in the form of "book pledges," each valued at $5.95 and good toward one new schoolbook. Book pledges can be purchased at all Powell's Books six Portland-area locations and online at Powells.com.

For each book pledge purchased, Powell's will, in turn, match the pledge with 10 additional books up to a maximum of 50,000 books. Step up to the challenge and help get books to kids.

SAVOY RULES THE ROOST!
The recent dining guide from The Oregonian named Fried Chicken at the Savoy Tavern + Bistro in the Clinton neighborhood, one of Portland's Best Bites. The delicious dish and your choice of two tasty sides is back on the Savoy menu every Sunday, available on a first come, first served basis. Now that everyone in town knows about it, you may want to dine earlier rather than later.

The rest of the menu pays homage to owner Peter Bro's Wisconsin roots - fried cheese curds, beer and a Friday night fish fry along with satisfying comfort food options including mac & cheese, steak and a housemade vegetarian burger. Since it opened in 2005 at the corner of 25th & SE Clinton, the Savoy has been a popular stop for families, friends and folks dining early or hanging out and enjoying the late night menu. Hearty entrees, sublime nightly specials and a list of classic cocktails, wine and beer offer something for everyone at a high value price point. To feed all the happy customers, the Savoy Tavern + Bistro is now open Mondays. Have questions? Call 503.808.9999.

The just published Restaurant Guide from Willamette Week also praises the guys at Savoy as well as the other stars of inner Southeast. Fasten your seatbelts everybody - we are one hot dining district! Still, the looming question remains... where to go for dinner tonight?

COMMUNITY CENTER CALL TO ACTION
For more than twenty years, Southeast Portland neighbors have been fighting for a community center. Though slow in coming, some progress was made when the City purchased the former Washington Monroe (WAMO) High School site. However, since then the City hasn't allocated any money to build the center or pay off the outstanding $4 million purchasing loan. The Mayor and the City Council continue to prioritize other projects ahead of making serious progress toward a new, full-service community center as they assign huge amounts of tax dollars and Urban Renewal District allotments to other projects like the Tram or the Burnside Bridgehead.

Southeast neighbors know that we all need a place to play: somewhere to work out, swim and gather. All of our neighbors need a place they can go - regardless of income levels. One of the only communities without a center, neighbors have been very patient. Tell the Council during their Tuesday, October 24th work session that now is the time to allocate funding to WAMO, the community center for inner Southeast Portland. Gather with neighbors at City Hall, Tuesday, October 24th at 9 am, 4th Avenue entrance, enjoy doughnuts and cider and tell the Council to put WAMO first. If you can't make the work session, send an email to the Council so that they hear loud and clear that WAMO is a priority!

PULL THE PLUG ON METERS & PERMITS
Many voices have been heard on the proposed parking meters and parking permits idea that Commissioner Adams brought to Hawthorne business owners and neighbors. A heated and divisive topic - the idea has been killed for now. The Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association (HBBA) has formally told Adams not to pursue the plan. Adams has accepted the HBBA's decision.

Discussion on the possibility of parking meters on Hawthorne brought up so many issues, opinions and questions that the HBBA has decided to convene a neighborhood summit to discuss the future of the district. Neighbors and business owners alike want to keep Hawthorne vibrant and unique, filled with small, locally-owned businesses rather than chain stores.

All interested parties are invited to participate in this important discussion on Friday, November 15th, 7 pm at the Chelsea Ballroom, 1510 SE Ninth Avenue. Learn more about the Hawthorne District at Think Hawthorne!.
